Columbia Final Voyage

Design of both the cover and interior pages for the Copernicus Books title Columbia Final Voyage, including page composition. The cover image is based upon the NASA portrait of the Columbia crew, cropped to heighten the contrast between the regality and technical sophistication of the astronaut uniform, and the tragic frailty of the human within.

Unpublished Book Covers

This is a collection of unpublished covers dating from 2000-2006. Some were rejected by publishers, while others weren't resolved until after the books were published—an exercise in design or obsessive vanity, depending upon personal opinion.

Strange Place

The first in a series of three, this book presents a wholly diverse and subjectively gathered survey of contemporary art. The goal was to generate a design which would remain editorially ambiguous, while allowing the composition of each section to be fluid and customized as each subject demanded.

Little Books

This book series presents a set of small, handy volumes on various topics written for the lay reader. The project was to present a modular model; a design that would be recognizable and cohesive, but flexible enougth to accomodate future books in the series. To further establish brand recognition, we also developed a Little Books logo-type that is “stamped” onto the back cover of all books in the series.

The Hundred Greatest Stars

The author of this book is a prominent astronomer, and the concept was to base a book around his very favorite one hundred stars. The square number 100 was used not only as the basis for the square format of the book, but as a device for designing the cover and interior. A grid of one hundred dots adorns the dust jacket, and on the back a corresponding grid of numbers. The casing has images of the one hundred stars, along with their corresponding names on the back. Combined, they offer an index of content for the book.
